Big second half leads Wolfpack to victory over Rams
Mobile, Ala. - The Louisiana New Orleans women’s
basketball team scored 47 points in the second half en route
to a 75-70 win over the Mobile Rams.
The Smith twins led the way for the ‘Pack once again with
a combined 39 points, but key plays by the role players
helped in the win. Freshman Amy Sprout came off the bench
to score six points and had three key offensive rebounds.
After a four all tie in the first few minutes of the game,
the Lady Rams went on a 15-0 run. A couple of baskets by
Sherri McIntosh and two three’s by Blair Stevens put the
Lady Rams up 19-4 at the 12:10 mark.
However, Loyola would respond with a 14-2 run. A three by
Trenese Smith and two by Trenell Smith brought back the
Wolfpack, cutting the deficit to three, 24-21. The Wolfpack
would go into the half down 36-28.
With the Wolfpack trailing at the half, Garkeiva Council
went on a terror after the break, scoring 11 points in the
first 4:30, giving the Wolfpack their first lead of the
game, 43-41.
A three by Laine Woodruff would extend Loyola’s lead to
61-51 with eight minutes to go.
Mobile would fight back in the final minute on a pair of
free throws by McIntosh, making the score 73-70, with 0:49
remaining. However, Trenese Smith hit a pair from the line
to seal the win for Loyola.
Trenese Smith led the Wolfpack (13-6, 9-2 GCAC) with 23
points on 8-of-19 shooting, including two from behind the
arc. Trenell Smith had 16 points and six assists. Garkeiva
Council scored 14, and Christine Mainguy led Loyola with 11
rebounds.
The Rams (12-11, 5-6 GCAC) had four players in double
figures. Danielle Goody led the way with 20 points and ten
rebounds. Gerica Johnson and Stevens had 14 points apiece,
and McIntosh had 13.
Loyola returns to action Monday at Spring Hill at 5:30 p.m.
